Whispers out of General Dynamic’s ’s Falls Church, Vir. headquarters suggest that something big is in the works for the company’s business jet subsidiary, Gulfstream. Speculation is that the private jet leader is set to unveil designs for a new jet at a ceremony this Thursday in Charleston, S.C.
The new jet, which will likely have the designation of G 600, is expected to have an extended range of 7,200 nautical miles, the power to cruise at Mach .85, and a wider body than Gulfstream’s current standard bearer, the $48 million G 550. The G 550 has faced a strong challenge from Bombardier’s Global Express RS, which has similar performance specs but a slightly more spacious cabin space. The G 600, which has been described as a fattened G 550, is said to accommodate 20 passengers.
Gulfstream’s impending announcement comes as the company has released sales figures which show that for the first time overseas orders surpassed those coming from North America. The rising fortunes of Russia’s oil barons along with sustained growth in India and China account for much of this trend. The new G 600, which will be able to fly from Beijing to Los Angeles without stopping to refuel was likely designed with the rising economic profile of that region, and its geographical vastness, in mind. This week may also reveal other news from Gulfstream, as the aviation community is buzzing that the jet maker giant will also unveil new iterations of smaller planes, like the G 150, already in its stable.
