Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers probably can’t believe his good luck. No, we’re not talking about his club’s watershed acquisition of veteran all-stars Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen at the end of last season, catapulting his team from the league’s second worst record of only 24 wins last year to a league best 66 wins this year. No we’re not talking about the fact that Rivers’ Celtics have emerged from three grueling playoff series and are now a seven game series against the Los Angeles away from a Championship. We’re talking about the fact that the former point guard got in early as a member of destination club Ultimate Resort (now Ultimate Escapes, following it’s merger with Private Escapes), back in 2006 and paid a lower deposit then he would if he were to join today. Ultimate Resort is essentially an exclusive country club which allows members access to luxury homes in destinations around the world. If Rivers ends up with a ring let’s hope he extends some of his guest privileges to a certain “Big Three.”

Ultimate Escapes for its part created a page on its website to congratulate the coach on winning the Eastern Conference Championship. The page goes as far to say that “Doc embodies the spirit of the Ultimate Escapes family of destinations clubs which are ideal for anyone who demands excellence in their work and their recreation.” We at Halogen Guides couldn’t agree more and see even more of an affinity between the coach and Ultimate Escapes. For years we’ve argued that Ultimate’s exacting guest services clearly were inspired by Doc’s swarming zone defense.

Doc’s Celtics face a tough match-up against the Lakers, beginning tonight on ABC at 9 EST. With some great matchups in store—Kobe Bryant vs. Ray Allen, Lamar Odom vs. Paul Pierce, Pau Gasol vs. Kevin Garnett, and of perennial champion Phil Jackson (we wonder, is he an Exclusive Resorts member perhaps) vs. Doc Rivers— we won’t be betting on the outcome of this series. But we’d be more than willing to wager that win or lose, Doc Rivers will be spending some well-deserved R&R at an Ultimate Escapes home very soon. After all, typically by this time of year he’s likely already “Gone Fishin’” at an Ultimate house or two since the end of the regular season play.
