FAA Grounds Eclipse 500s After Engine Throttle Mishap

Eclipse500 The Federal Aviation Administration has issued an emergency order grounding all Eclipse 500 VLJs following an incident involving one of the planes last week at Chicago Midway.

The Eclipse 500 involved in the incident had just 238 hours of flight time and 192 takeoffs and landings. On June 5 the plane, operated by Jimsair Charter & Management of San Diego, was flying into Chicago, Midway with two pilots and four passengers, according to a letter sent by the National Transportation and Safety Board to the FAA reporting on the incident. Apparently, while landing the pilots encountered a strong and sudden gust which they countered with an increase in thrust. But as the plane touched down, and the pilot attempted pull back on the throttle, the engines continued to accelerate. With the runway running out ahead, the pilots were forced to pull up into the air again.

With the engines stuck on full power, the pilots lowered the landing gear in an attempt to slow the plane. Consulting manuals, the pilots deciphered how to shut down the left or right engine in the event of malfunction. The manual did not, however indicate how to reset both engines. The pilots were able to shut down one of the engines, at which time they lost control of the other. It is believed that a software malfunction caused that engine to revert to the “last valid throttle lever position.”

The pilots were able to land the aircraft, and although the force was great enough to blow out the plane’s tires, neither the pilots nor their passengers suffered any injuries.

The FAA has grounded all Eclipse 500s, 207 of which are now in service, while it conducts a further investigation. The FAA will begin by looking for similar incidents. It will further advise owners and operators to examine their plane’s throttles to ensure they have not been pushed to hard, and it will advise pilots of the vulnerability of the throttle system.

Eclipse has been through a series of difficulties over the last year or so. In May, its largest customer, the “Air Taxi” operator Dayjet announced a major scale back, which included the partial rescinding of orders for additional aircraft. Even as demand has remained high for Eclipses, the manufacturer has struggled with production. This new incident is likely to add further fuel to the criticism the company has received from a coterie of vociferous bloggers.
