Real Estate Downturn Causes Developer to Lose Inhibitions

Sex sells, or so the old saying goes. In the hard hit Florida real estate market, where developers will do anything to attract buyers, a condominium conversion project is hoping that’s true. The Arbors at Branch Creek outside Tampa had been experiencing stagnant sales, before ownership came up with the idea of converting its pool into a “clothing optional” facility.
It’s not often that we have to issue a “work warning” to readers of our website. But in the interest of anyone’s job security who might be reading this, beware before clicking the outbound link here for the rebranded Eden a “clothing optional condominium community.” Long the province of a trailer parks and hippy communes, it seems that the nudist colony is making a jump to a higher income bracket. Set around a protected wetland sanctuary, Eden is billing itself as the “perfect habitat for the uninhibited.”
Eden (tagline: “As nature intended”) is offering 390 tasteful one-, two-, and three-bedroom condos starting at $170,000 and ranging up to $385,000. Amenities include acres of nature preserves, tennis courts, and a fitness center. The development is in fact not “all-nude”- a blessing considering the prospect of naked pilates classes. Visitors not looking to get an eye full would be well advised to avoid the clothing optional “European/South Beach style” pool.
Naturally some of the developments previous residents are upset with the conversion of their community into a den of hedonism, with several complaints lodged against the management. We’re not sure why they are so stuck up. After all, the Eden website’s frequently asked questions (FAQ) section clearly states that “you can wear a thong, go topless, and even wear a suit if that is your preference.”
As much as we’d like to believe that Eden’s residents will consist of the beautiful and free-spirited young models gracing the pages of its website, the snowbirds who make up the major demographic for the Florida condo market means that most of the buyers will be less photogenic in their birthday suits.
You might say that this trend is a new “wrinkle” in the real estate market.
