Abercrombie & Kent Residence Club Update

Bellehavens Cabo San Lucas Property Abercrombie & Kent Residence Club president Jarvis J. Slade, Jr. dropped by Halogen Guides’ offices here in San Francisco this week to give us a sneak peak as his club prepares for its official launch this fall.

While the club’s membership tiers and pricing are still under wraps, Slade was able to tell us that the club will offer a limited number of membership choices, including an entry level tier that he said will appeal “to young professionals with families,” and more expansive plans for members looking for extended vacation options. The plans will be priced competitively with other clubs in the luxury destination club market, with yearly dues commensurate with membership deposits (or “capital contributions” as A&K calls them.)

With 350 trips to 106 countries, Abercrombie & Kent’s famous tours are likely to be a major draw for potential members. Depending on membership level, members will be able to use up to 7 or 14 of their allotted days on an A&K tour. For the majority of tours, members will be able to get a one to one swap between days in an A&K home and days on a tour. On certain trips, like those run on private jets, or if members are traveling with a large party, there could be an additional cost. “For a couple, the cost of the trip would be covered. A family of four would have half of the trip covered,” Slade said.

Slade is betting that Abercrombie & Kent’s experience will give the club an advantage in the service department over its rivals. Slade said that the club’s worldwide infrastructure will facilitate superior concierge and travel services, such as the ability for members to speed through customs and security at various airports. Eventually the club plans to have all members met at the airport, and even on the tarmac when possible.

After settling into its operations, the club is looking to expand through the end of this year and into 2009. First on the list is to fill any holes in the real estate portfolio it inherited from destination clubs BelleHavens and Crescendo. Look for A&K to add homes in the Turks & Caicos, Aspen, Colo., and Southeast Florida. From there the club will seek to build out capacity in popular locales such as Cabo San Lucas, the Dominican Republic, and Hawaii. Finally, Slade said the club will purchase properties in European cities such as Paris and Rome and what he called “classic A&K global destinations” like Kenya, Morocco, and Thailand.

Expect prices for A&K’s membership plans to be announced in the next few months. Next week we will explore A&K’s new take on the equity model of destination clubs.

i bought a 450,000 membership to A K destination clubs, asked for my money back which they were supposed to do........ Any how, I've never seen a nickel back from the bankruptcy of the last one. Are they serious about another after leaving everybody high and dry?

The Tanner and Haley bankruptcy was horrible for you and a black eye for the industry. However, why do you blame A&K when you really need to look at T&H and its management? Is it because A&K is the only deep pocket that's around? A&K made the bad choice to license its good name for about one year to a company that ended up making a lot of bad financial decisions and investments. Also, were you not at least offered an Ultimate Resorts membership at no cost?
