Exclusive Resorts' Holiday Usage Premiums

Exclusive Resorts Deer Valley Earlier this week Halogen Guides released the latest version of our cost-per-night analysis of destination clubs. Our aim is to provide consumers with an accurate understanding of the true cost of membership at the various destination clubs, along with a way to compare those costs with other vacation options. But as we gathered the latest numbers from all the clubs we realized that plans from industry leader Exclusive Resorts don’t provide an easy comparison with other clubs.

When Exclusive Resorts revamped its membership plans this spring, it made holiday bookings an à la carte selection. In order to book a vacation during peak holiday seasons, you need to pay a one-time, non-refundable fee of $49,000 or $79,000, depending on the holiday. Christmas week, for instance, carries a premium over the Fourth of July.

Exclusive Resorts instituted these premiums in order to clear up the log-jam of bookings during holidays when, not surprisingly, families with children want to travel. So how much do these extra fees add to the bottom line? It depends on how you crunch the numbers.

Assuming a membership of ten years, an Exclusive Resorts member with a 30-day plan who opts for the $49,000 “Select Holiday” access, which includes spring break, Thanksgiving and the Fourth of July, will see their overall cost-per-night creep up by $163 more per night. A member with a 60-day plan who adds on the $79,000 “Peak Holiday” access, that includes travel during Christmas, New Year’s or President’s Day, will pay $132 more per night overall if they use all of their allotted nights.

Of course, you can also break out the cost by looking at what those extra fees add to the cost-per-night of that one prime vacation week. For that same 30-day plan, the cost-per-night jumps by $700 during a holiday week, while a 60-day plan would see nightly rates rise by $1,128 over a prime travel week.

Considering that hotel and villa rental rates can rise significantly during high seasons, the increase, over certain holidays, is in line with the increased cost of traveling. For instance a three-bedroom villa on Nevis during the Christmas and New Year’s weeks has a weekly rental rate of $26,950, versus a regular winter rate of $19,250. Of course, other holidays have much lower premium jumps, so the decision to add holiday access comes down to, well, just how badly you want to travel during these prime times.

If a member does pay the premium, it’s worthwhile to remember that it is a one-time fee, so the longer a member remains in the club, the more that cost will be defrayed.
