Private Jet Trip of the Month: The US Open

239618778 153e47d312 If you love professional tennis for the all-white outfits, restrained applause, and the general sense of good propriety, then the U.S. Open might not be for you. Stick to Wimbledon.

Because, out at Flushing Meadows in New York every year for the two weeks spanning the end of August and the beginning of September, the players and the fans alike let it all hang out for the sport’s final Grand Slam event. And while the U.S. Open makes for great television, nothing can match the electrifying energy of being there on a hot August night, hot dog in hand, to watch the game’s greats meet under the bright lights of Arthur Ashe Stadium.

It’s not too late to start planning a trip to the American hard court championships.

Getting There:

There’s no shortage of airports serving private jet flying into the New York City area. A short drive from Manhattan, just across the George Washington Bridge is Teterboro Airport, a favorite of corporate and private jet flyers. Flushing Meadows itself is just a few miles south of LaGuardia airport, and JFK isn’t much further. Slightly further afield is Republic Airport just up the highway in Long Island. If you’re looking to avoid some of the congestion at other New York airports, you might consider flying in and out of Westchester County Airport. It’s a bit further away, but is home to a number of FBOs, as well as NetJets, meaning it could cost you less in terms of repositioning fees.

To get some quotes for charter flights into the New York area check out Virgin Charter. Rates can vary significantly depending on the aircraft type you select and which airport you are leaving from and flying into (it’s a good idea to see if a particular charter operator has a center operations at an airport you will be using.) That said, for round-trip flights from San Francisco, Chicago, and Miami to Teterboro aboard a mid-size jet, we found an average cost of just under $10,000 an hour.

You might also consider using time from a fractional card for a trip to the US Open, but given the fact that you’ll be flying to a major hub in New York City, it’s likely you’ll get a better deal chartering your trip.

Where To Stay:

Checking in at our sister site Halogen Guides Travel we’ve come across some great deals in New York City. The classic Peninsula Hotel is offering a 30% seasonal savings if you book before September 1. For a hipper option, The W Hotel is offering a complimentary third night.

A destination club membership is another option. Many destination clubs also have luxury residences in New York.

Tickets:

The sprawling USTA Billy Jean King Tennis Center houses 22 courts, which will be in full swing during the tournament. Tickets are available from the US Open’s website. The best tickets for the early rounds go for around $350 each. The best tickets for the finals though, on Sunday Sept. 7, are currently going for as much as $5,000 each.
