Canada Set to Get a Little Hipper: Gansevoort Brings Hotel and Residences to Toronto

Gansevoort, a hotel brand that calls its properties “urban resorts” (complete with stellar spas, rooftop pools and outdoor bar scenes), will open a new property in Toronto, a city that is seeing an influx of luxury developments from Trump, Shangri-La and Ritz-Carlton.
The Gansevoort Toronto Hotel & Residences is aiming for LEED certification, and designers are creating energy efficient living spaces as well as environmentally-friendly aesthetic features like hanging gardens. And while Toronto might not exactly have year-round outdoor swimming weather, the hotel will have the requisite rooftop pool, along with a landscaped outdoor lounge.
Opening in 2011, the Gansevoort will have 130 studio, one- and two-bedroom residences ranging in size from 600 to 4,000 square feet. Prices will start around $800,000, a figure that is in line with other luxury residential projects in Toronto. Prices will likely reach well into the millions, a trend echoed at projects like the Residences at the Four Seasons in Toronto where units top out at $16 million.
The Gansevoort Hotel Group is continuing to expand its list of properties, opening a second New York hotel in 2009. Its first residential property in Miami Beach opened this year. Judging by the noise complaints to the Miami Beach Planning Board from residents at neighboring condominium developments, the rooftop bar scene at the Gansevoort South is nothing short of a hit with tourists. (The hotel is working on ways to contain the noise, according to the Miami Herald.) One can only expect that the Canadians might be a little more low-key in their rooftop festivities.
