Taj Safaris Adds Two New Lodges for Tiger Watching in India

India’s Bengal tigers are drawing safari-goers looking for wildlife in a setting relatively untouched by tourists. Soon visitors will have more options for luxury accommodation in this remote location. This year, Taj Safaris, a partnership between Taj Hotels and safari operator Conservation Corporation Africa, is adding two lodges to its collection of luxury retreats in Madhya Pradesh, a tiger-dense state in central India. Each lodge sits adjacent to a national park, serving as an ideal base camp for viewing tigers and other wildlife.

In November, Taj Safaris will open Pashan Garh, a lodge with 12 stone cottages near Panna National Park. The cottages sit on stilts over the forest floor. Along with tigers, visitors may also see leopards, antelope, sloth bears and crocodiles. The second new lodge, Banjaar Tola, will open in December. Adjacent to Kanha National Park, each of the lodge’s 18-tented suites will have bamboo floors and a private deck.

Room rates at both lodges during the high season from October to mid-April start at $626 per person (at 48 rupees to the dollar) and include meals and safari drives. Prices drop by 40% in the low season (mid-April to the end of June). Lodges are closed July through September for monsoon season. Travelers who arrange stays at multiple lodges secure discounts of 5%–20% off the nightly rate.
