We’ve reached the end of our “Da Vinci Club” quest to calculate the cost-per-night for destination clubs. The chart below shows the results of our analysis, which we described in detail in Part 1 and Part 2 this week.
Our figures range from $295 per night for High Country Club (based on their introductory pricing) to $6,000 per night for Tanner & Haley’s Legendary Retreats. We’ve listed all of the clubs below.
The model we created is not the only way to calculate these figures. Nor is it a sufficient means to compare destination clubs. You’ll see that the costs correlate to membership deposits and there are many other factors to consider in your decision.
Some elements we did not include in the model (but you could add to your own):
- Appreciation in annual dues (CPI)
- Opportunity cost of annual dues (we’re assuming you’d spend it elsewhere traveling)
- Future value of membership deposit (hard to guess what that’ll be, but important to consider)
- More or less days of usage
- More aggressive return for opportunity cost of capital
- Tax effect on income earned in another investment
We hinted on Monday that the industry average is $1,800 per night. What’s important to note is not the cost from one club to another, but how these rates stack up against alternatives such as luxury hotel rooms.
For comparison, we looked up the rates at two top resort destinations: Las Ventanas (Cabo San Lucas, Mexico) and The Peaks Resort (Telluride, Colorado). During peak season, Las Ventanas charges $5,000 per night for a three-bedroom suite. A week at The Peaks during holiday season (Dec 22-29) costs $19,315 for a three-bedroom cabin ($2,759 per night).
In contrast, the annual dues for luxury destination clubs are comparable to a week’s vacation at either of these resorts – but you’ll get an extra 3 to 4 weeks of stays and usually an extra bedroom, too.
