Abercrombie & Kent, British Airways Getting Environmentally Friendly

The carbon neutral trend and other environmentally friendly initiatives are taking off in the travel world. From now through March 31, luxury travel company Abercrombie & Kent will install a Climate Change Challenge in the British Airways Club Lounge at John F. Kennedy International Aiport in New York (That’s terminal 7 for those of you passing through.)
The Climate Change Challenge will teach guests through interactive videos and computer workstations about the threats facing our environment from Antartica to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Abercrombie & Kent is also going beyond the Climate Change Challenge by promising to plant a tree for every client who travels with them in 2007.
As for British Airways, the international airline seems to be at the forefront of commercial airlines with environmental concerns. British Airways is actively trading carbon emissions and has lobbied for aviation to be included in the EU emissions trading scheme for the past seven years. The airline has also reduced the noise impact from its aircrafts since the late 1990s and improved fuel efficiency by 27 percent since 1990.
But most notably, the airline is offering passengers the option to offset the emissions from their journeys with a voluntary carbon offset program, like TerraPass.
However, we aren’t quite sure how British Airways’s program works. It took a bit of digging on their web site (we ended up typing in “Climate Care” in the site’s search engine) and found a Q&A section that said customers can pay via a link on the airline’s web site. But we still couldn’t find where and we don’t know to which company our contribution would go.
Until British Airways has a more direct way to purchase these offsets, we say stick to TerraPass.
