Relaxed policies for luxury jet modifications could spell relief for private jet owners if a new proposal by federal regulators passes, according to Cindy Skrzycki at Bloomberg News.
Private jet owners often hire personal designers to help upgrade interiors to have large dining areas, bedrooms, bathing facilities – even spiral staircases – virtually creating a flying home.
Current aircraft regulations, which were made with commercial airline passenger safety in mind, require private jet owners to go through an extensive and expensive exemption process in order to make modifications to jets.
The Federal Aviation Administration is considering less strict safety regulations. The eased restriction would allow certain doors or partitions and approve certain luxury materials – such as fabrics like mohair and suede as well as tapestries for walls and ceilings, Bloomberg reports.
Flammability rules currently prohibit the use of certain materials that prevent commercial airline passengers be able to evacuate an aircraft within 90 seconds. These rules could be waived, the FAA said, if luxury jet passengers can get out in 45 seconds.
The proposal for eased restrictions, which was first introduced July 13, was pushed by the General Aviation Manufacturers Association, a Washington-based trade organization representing 60 aircraft companies, including Boeing, Bombardier and Cessna.
Total luxury jets sales have more than doubled to $16.5 billion since 1988, and sales of high-end business jets, which climbed from 515 in 1998 to 885 last year, according to Bloomberg, have created a thriving business in decked-out jets.
While the proposal may come with excellent timing, a number of items, such as chandeliers, a hot tub and a glass disco dance floor in a Boeing 777-200 may still be prohibited.
