LUSSO Hits 100 Member Mark, Plans International Expansion

Boutique destination club LUSSO Collection recently reached a milestone with the addition of its 100th member, but even as new properties are rolled out, CEO and club founder Steve Greer says he has no plans to raise the membership cap beyond the planned 550 members.
“A club’s structure is of far greater importance than its size,” said Greer, who points to Tanner & Haley’s status as the second largest club when it filed for bankruptcy in 2006. “Size doesn’t guarantee anything.”
LUSSO will limit membership in order to preserve the amenities and services that Greer said helps distinguish the club from its larger competitors. Since LUSSO’s official launch in June 2006 with 30 members, the club has offered just one level of membership (annual dues are jumping on November 1 to $28,000), that allows unlimited use of homes, rather than tiered pricing. “Everyone is on one level playing field,” said Greer.
Members also have perks like the ability to gift up to two weeks of vacation a year to family members, access homes stocked with extras like men’s and women’s golf clubs and, in most locations, use a Lincoln Navigator left at the property.
LUSSO currently has homes in New York, Aspen, Colo., Hawaii’s Big Island and Truckee, Calif., among other resort locations. Villas are in the works for Bocas del Toro, a Panamian island chain, and last week the club announced its second property in Naples, Fla., a 5,369 square foot home with an outdoor kitchen and swimming pool, that is within walking distance to the beach. Looking forward to next year, Greer sees an aggressive rollout of new destinations. “We have another six to 12 properties in the works,” he said, noting that there will be more of a focus on custom-built homes from developers and the club’s first European properties. “We’ll be close to 20 destinations by the end of 2008.”
