World's Largest Private Jet Ordered by Alwaleed

Valleywaggers, stop bantering about the Google private jets—they’re merely Boeing 767s, and they don’t have missile defense systems. The Associated Press yesterday reported that Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal’s newest toy will be an Airbus A380 valued at over $300 million (before gadgets).

The Airbus A380 is the world’s biggest passenger plane and flew its maiden voyage in September with Singapore Airlines. As a commercial jet the A380 can seat over 800 passengers. But refitted for private use, the jet will likely transport less than 50 people at any given time. The Wall Street Journal’s Robert Frank reported earlier this year that the previously unnamed buyer’s A380, outfitted by Edése Doret for $100 to $150 million, might also include a missile defense system.

A cursory look at the math shows at least $400 million for the total cost of Alwaleed’s jet—Whirlpool hot tub and gameroom included. But keep in mind that the sky’s the limit when considering private jet interiors. Versace, PrivatAir, Lufthansa Technik and others can craft pretty much anything to a client’s needs so long as the plane can fly safely.

So who is next in line for the world’s largest jet? Keep your eyes on some of the Russian billionaires. Boeing says that seven Boeing 787 Dreamliners are already under contract, and a BMW Designworks USA representative told Helium Report that when designing the interior concept for the Dreamliner, they had some specific (though unnamed) young billionaires in mind.
