Hollywood has taken quite a shine to Toronto and a bevy of films are being shot in this cosmopolitan Canadian city. But it’s not just the movie industry eyeing our northern neighbor. Developers have flocked to Toronto, which now has some 13 luxury high-rise projects in the works.
A recent report released by the Urban Land Institute and PricewaterhouseCoopers predicting that real estate activity in Canada will stay strong in 2008 is a sign that the Canadian markets may be bucking the real estate slowdown that much of the U.S. is now seeing. In fact the greater Toronto area has seen a record number of sales in 2007 and average prices are up some 11 percent over last year.
That’s no doubt good news for luxury developers rolling out new hotels with residential components, many with units attached to multi-million dollar price tags. Befitting a city known for its cultural attractions, swank restaurants, and vibrant nightlife, several projects are being built by some of the biggest resort developers.
So before a Hollywood starlet snaps up one of the chic residences let’s take a look at four of the five-star projects slated to enhance the sparkle of Toronto’s skyline.
The Residences at The Ritz-Carlton
In the heart of Toronto’s financial district and steps from many of the city’s most famous cultural attractions, the Residences at The Ritz-Carlton will occupy the top 30 floors of this 53-story luxury building while the hotel will occupy the lower floors. Set for completion in 2009, the Residences will boast panoramic views of Toronto’s skyline on one side and expansive Lake Ontario views on the other. Prices for 135 units range from $1.3 million to over $8 million.
Living Shangri-La
Chic, modern, Asian-style luxury comes to Toronto with the arrival of Living Shangri-La, a $340 million, five-star hotel and residence tower. Some 352 residences will occupy the top 48 floors of this 65-story building slated for completion in 2011 and prices range from $800,000 to over $10 million.
Trump International Hotel and Tower
When completed in 2009, the Trump International Hotel and Tower will be the tallest residential building in Canada, surpassed only by Toronto’s CN tower, the world’s largest freestanding building. The 149 posh residences will have floor-to-ceiling windows with expansive city and lake views. Residences start at $800,000.
Four Seasons Private Residences
Set to open in 2009 in the exclusive Yorkville neighborhood, the Four Seasons will consist of two glass, stone, and steel towers connected by an elevated pedestrian bridge. Residences will have a sleek, cosmopolitan vibe that mirrors the sophistication of the city and owners will enjoy the privacy of a residents-only entrance separate from the hotel lobby. Asking prices for the 204 residences range from $1.2 to $16 million.
