Private Residence Club Spotlight: Mision la Serena in San Jose del Cabo
| Written by Laura Balch 01/21/2008 |
Founded as Misión San José Añuiti de las Palmas in 1730, San José del Cabo, located 20 minutes from Cabo San Lucas, has held on to its old-world charm even as modern resort communities have begun to spring up in its midst. The streets are still cobblestoned, and family-owned shops and restaurants thrive in the colorful surroundings. Misión la Serena is a beachfront residence club located in the planned community of Puerto Los Cabos, 2,000 acres of bluffs, rolling hills and coastline encompassed by San José del Cabo.
What’s for sale

One-eighth shares of two- and three-bedroom residences. Prices range from $375,000 to $435,000 for each share in a 2,000 to 4,700 square foot unit.
What you get
A minimum of six weeks of flexible use per year, with unlimited access based on availability. These 75 residences located on 10 acres of land in the planned development of Puerto Los Cabos, are dispersed among 12 low-rise buildings constructed in the style of Mexican Mission-period architecture. Each unit features a terrace with an infinity-edge plunge pool and open air shower, a modern kitchen, and thoughtfully selected artwork by up-and-coming Mexican artists. Each building also has a rooftop terrace with panoramic ocean views for social gatherings, whale-watching, or outdoor dining.
The resort itself offers a slew of amenities, including a sports club, spa facilities, three pools and a 400-slip marina and fishing village. In addition, the resort will be home to two new championship golf courses designed by Jack Nicklaus and Greg Norman. The Greg Norman course will be private, reserved for the exclusive use of homeowners in the community.
The Helium Report take
Puerto Los Cabos will appeal to travelers who prefer a vacation destination that sits slightly off the beaten path, but who still require all the luxury and convenience of a beachfront resort community. Of course, the tip of Baja is a hot bed of development fueled by U.S. tourism and an influx of second home buyers. The area has the largest concentration of destination club-owned properties with more than 60 residences owned by clubs. Fractionals also abound, from the existing luxury options like the Residences at Esperanza to new developments including Capella Pedregal which is finishing its first fractional home this month. Shares at Capella start at $440,000 for five weeks of usage.
