Lusso Collection Destination Club Abaco BahamasPrice increases are commonplace among destination clubs, which once or twice a year bump up membership deposit costs. On March 1, Lusso Collection is both raising the price for its three membership plans and also discontinuing a unique deposit refund program.

The costs of an individual membership, which includes unlimited use of the Lusso homes, will jump to $425,000, a $30,000 increase. The price of corporate and group memberships, which are designed to be shared and include 56 days of use, will rise $37,500 to $531,250. Under the individual plan, members can have two advanced reservations on the book at any given time.

In a letter posted on Lusso’s website, founder and CEO Steve Greer, also explained that the “membership reward” program is set to end on March 1. That program gave resigning members both a full deposit refund and a 50 percent share of any increase in the cost of a club membership. Members who join the club after March 1 will simply get 100 percent of their deposit back when they resign. The 100 percent refund bar is not common in the destination club industry. Many clubs offer an 80 percent refund, while others offer 100 percent, but with caveats. For instance Quintess’ 100 percent refund is good for only the first year (it drops to 80 percent after that), while Solstice offers a 100 percent refund after a member has been part of the club for two years.

Lusso Collection has 25 homes in 14 destinations including Aspen, Colo., Scottsdale, Ariz. and Abaco Island in the Bahamas. Last month the club added two new homes in Jackson Hole, Wyom. that sit at the base of the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. By the end of 2008, Greer said, the club should expand to 20 destinations (it has homes in development in Costa Rica and Panama) and double the number of properties in its portfolio.

Last year, the club also hit a membership milestone by topping 100 members, and it recently revamped its website to better showcase the properties online.

This is typical...new clubs try to offer better incentives to join, and then take them away after a year or two. Quintess has also slowly reduced the "extra" benefits that came with their membership.

They are not taking these benefits away from current members. Only future members.
