Fractional car share clubs, or exotic car clubs, allow car enthusiasts to drive the car of their dreams at a lower price. By joining an exotic car club instead of renting or buying, members do not have to worry about rental or maintenance fees. After paying an up-front membership fee, and then annual fees, members are allotted a certain number of days and points to drive any of the cars available in the club. Some clubs allow members to buy equity in the car(s), too.
- Access to a fleet of exotic cars instead of just one
- Don’t have to worry about maintenance and repair of car
- Don’t have to worry about depreciation of car
- Don’t have to worry about finding storage for car
- You don’t spend money on an exotic car that sits in a garage the majority of the year
- Cost-per-day more reasonable than rental rates
- Membership fees more feasible than upfront fee of purchasing a car
- Exotic cars are more likely to be available than at rental companies
- Share you passion with like-minded individuals
- Concierge services
Compared to renting an exotic car or even purchasing one, buying membership into an exotic car club is more reasonable. Renting a car – take a 2006 Ferrari F430 Spider – can cost around $3,000 per day, whereas the same car can be driven for $300 per day when part of an exotic car club. Purchasing the car can cost around $192,000 (around $3,840 a day if driven for 50 days) but this does not include the extra fees such as maintenance, insurance, licensing, etc. Consumers need to factor in the intangibles when deciding whether to purchase a car or join a club; accessibility, how often the exotic cars are used and how far they are driven should be considered.
The primary risk involved in joining an exotic car club is not being able to be refunded the membership deposit due to poor management of the company. If an exotic car club doesn’t have a plan of what to do when members resign (especially at high rates), or in the worst-case scenario goes bankrupt, then members won’t be able to receive the amount promised to them when terminating membership.
